Family Camping: 5 Fun Outdoor Activities for Kids

Family Camping: 5 Fun Outdoor Activities for Kids

If you're a parent who loves camping and the outdoors, the idea of bringing your young children along sounds like the perfect opportunity for family bonding. But what happens when you finally get your tent set up, get the fire crackling, and your child sighs and says, "I'm bored"?

It's understandable for young kids who are used to playing with electronics to feel a little bored and restless during their first family camping experience. But it doesn't have to be this way--you can help foster their love for camping by planning a few fun outdoor activities.

In today's blog post,  Artemis Overland shares five fun outdoor activities for kids to create long-lasting family camping memories!

1. Nature Scavenger Hunt

A nature scavenger hunt is a great way to get your child excited about the outdoors while encouraging a bit of friendly competition with siblings! Like a standard scavenger hunt, kids are given a list of items to find and bring back to the campsite. You can create your list or download an easy nature scavenger hunt printable from Fantastic Fun and Learning.

2. Glowing Ring Toss

Kids will get a huge kick out of playing outdoors at night by the light of the campfire. Easily create a glow-in-the-dark ring toss game by sticking several large glow sticks in the ground at varying distances and letting your kids throw glow necklaces to try and ring the stick. Get simple instructions for this game at Home Front Magazine.

3. Flashlight Tag

Flashlight tag is a timeless classic for family camping trips! All family members can participate in this fun outdoor activity, which requires at least three players. The game is played like standard tag, only it's played in the dark, and the "it" person uses the flashlight beam to tag a player out.  Read the full instructions here.

4. Nature Paintings

For kids who love art, nature can be the ultimate inspiration. Kids can use some of the items they've found during the nature scavenger hunt to create beautiful works of art. Construction paper, glue, crayons, or watercolor paints are all you need to create special memories of family camping for your kids to take home.  Check out this blog post for more unique ideas for nature art.

5. Campfire Games

There's no better way to bond with your kids during family camping than to play a few fun campfire games. Laugh with your kids as you play  "Would You Rather?" or  invest in a family-friendly card deck of conversation starters to use around the campfire or while driving to and from your campsite.
